To facilitate the implementation of Free-Flow Tolling (FFTS) at Government Toll Tunnels in Hong Kong, LSCM has proposed and developed the RFID Device (Two-piece device for Tolling Application) that is specially designed for commercial vehicles for splitting of the toll payment amongst vehicle owners and drivers. It provides a reliable and durable means of managing toll fees for a wide range of vehicles.
The system consists of a two-piece structure of RFID tag, comprising an RFID card and the card slot. The use of a standalone RFID card with a short-read range of around 3 cm to store the driver's tolling account's unique identity is an innovative solution. The short-read range helps to ensure that the data is secure and not easily accessible by unauthorised users. When the card is inserted into the card slot, the amplifying antenna in the slot couples with the RFID card, extending the read range to more than 7 meters. This enables longer-range communication between the tag and the reader. The Two-piece tag device can easily differentiate different drivers. In the tolling application, information of both the drivers and vehicles can be collected simultaneously in each transit.
Besides, the magnetic locking feature on the RFID card with the slot is a unique invention that eliminates the need for any mechanical mechanism to hold the card in place. In developing the technologies, LSCM has conducted thorough laboratory testing and site trials, and monitoring of the Two-piece tag device's performance. The Two-piece tag device was tested in different orientations, separations, with water on glass, thermal chambers, and mechanical shock to ensure that its performance is reliable in various environments. With LSCM’s well and advance planning, the tests and site trials were completed successfully, having satisfactory performance.
These technologies developed by LSCM have been adopted by the Transport Department and widely deployed in the HKeToll which would be launched at all Government tolled tunnels by the end of 2023.
The Two-piece tag device has just received an award in the 3rd Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong held in December 2023. |
