Robotic Tagging and Tracking Technology for Livestock Food Safety Applications
At Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse, veterinary officers collect samples from the pigs and conduct tests for chemical residues to prevent contamination to Hong Kong’s food supply chain. During the processes, the pigs will be auctioned and kept in the buyer’s lairages until the test results are released. Currently, it takes much time to identify the pigs concerned if any problems are found in the samples.
Aiming to enhance the efficiency of the procedures, LSCM developed a robotic system with auto-ID tagging functions to spray AR tag marks on the undulating/ hairy surface on the skin of the livestock with the application of AI technology. When a pig is unloaded from a truck and walking along the passageway to the auction area, the robotic tagging system will detect its walking speed and identify a suitable area on its back and spray an AR tag representing the pig’s farm. An AR tag recognition system is also developed to track the location of the pigs concerned at the lairages using AI technology.
The system could enhance the efficiency of the slaughtering line and reduce the loss of time and money resulted from unnecessary suspension in the processes. The innovation from this project could be applied to the auto-ID tagging and tracking of other livestock in the slaughtering industry, such as ox-slaughtering and lamb-slaughtering, etc.
