Project Title: | An Intelligent Phishing Detector with Enhanced Capabilities in Detecting Adversarial Attacks |
Hosting Institution: | LSCM R&D Centre (LSCM) |
Abstract: | Phishing attacks have become increasingly prevalent in today's digital landscape. In the period of January to November 2023, 48% of cybersecurity incidents handled by the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) was phishing, representing the most numerous cybersecurity threat. The sophistication of phishing techniques has evolved over time, making it more difficult for users to identify fraudulent websites. Cybercriminals often employ deceptive tactics such as creating convincing replicas of legitimate sites to lure victims. To combat this growing threat, cyber security companies have developed similarity detectors by leveraging advanced algorithms that analyze characteristics and detect similarities with legitimate websites. However, cyber criminals have begun employing evasive techniques to bypass similarity detectors. One such technique is called an adversarial attack and involves making subtle changes to the replica website that are visually almost indifferent for humans but different to the similarity detector. As result, such phishing attacks are more likely to succeed. We aim to develop an intelligent phishing detector with enhanced capabilities to improve its robustness against adversarial attacks. Implementing such a solution would empower users to navigate the internet more securely, safeguarding their private and confidential information from falling into the wrong hands. |
