Project Title: | Next-generation Imaging Technologies of Rapid Leakage Diagnosis of Underground High-Pressure and Large Water Mains in Carriageway |
Hosting Institution: | The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) |
Abstract: | On average, 15% of precious water resources is lost in HK underground water mains networks. According to Policy Address 2018 and 2021, The HK Government pledges to reduce the water loss to 10% by 2030. Rapid road-based imaging and diagnostic technologies and data-driven solutions are of high demand to improve efficiency of leakage detection while disturbance to water supply and the public is minimized. With the support by Water Supplies Department (WSD) of HKSARG and industrial sponsorship, the project aims to develop next-generation imaging technologies of rapid leakage detection of underground high-pressure and large water mains in carriageway where most large water mains are buried. Machine-learning based change-detection and pattern-recognition solutions will be developed to formulate levels of sensitivity and specificity at different leakage magnitudes will be formulated in a 25,000 sq,ft test Q-Leak Center of WSD (designed by the PC in 2020-2021), and validate the identified leakage in two pilot sites. The validated leakage in the two sites, after repair by WSD, will be closely monitored by building a data-driven framework. It is expected the developed technologies and solutions can be applied in whole Hong Kong and commercialized elsewhere where similar problems exist. |
