Project Title: | Development of Integrated InSAR and Mobile Surveying Technologies for Monitoring Land Subsidence |
Hosting Institution: | The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) |
Abstract: | Land subsidence as a result of land reclamation or induced by, e.g., underground constructions such as the construction work of the MTR lines is very common and can often cause severe damages to infrastructures such as airport runways, roads, and buildings. Monitoring land subsidence is essential for thorough understanding of the spatiotemporal characteristics of land subsidence and for better managing the risks. Current technologies for monitoring land subsidence are very inadequate due to their significant limitations in efficiency and cost effectiveness. This project aims to develop new and advanced technologies for more efficient and costeffective monitoring of land subsidence over large land areas. The technologies will include improved satellite synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR), a new mobile surveying technology, and a technological framework that will integrate the InSAR and mobile surveying technologies. The InSAR and the mobile survey technologies are complementary to each other and their tight integration will result in a very competent technology for accurate monitoring of land subsidence over large land areas. The new technology will enable land subsidence monitoring over large areas such as airport runways and new towns built on reclaimed land to be monitored much more easily and efficiently and future land subsidence to be predicted based on subsidence history measured. The technology will be potentially used widely in Hong Kong and othercountries/regions, advancing the technological frontiers and exporting Hong Kong technologies to the world. |
