Project Title: | Smart Service Robot for Elderly |
Hosting Institution: | LSCM R&D Centre (LSCM) |
Abstract: | Industrial Robots (IR) usually perform fast, repetitive and routine tasks to improve productivity at various industrial sectors e.g. manufacturing and/or automotive. Interactions with human operators are highly restricted. On the other hand, Service Robots (SR) are designed and developed to handle specific tasks that often interact with human. In some cases, service robots are developed to perform complicated and dangerous tasks that human life could be threatened. For example, wall crawling robots are deployed to perform pipe inspection tasks in nuclear power plants. This project aims to develop key building block technologies of service robots for warehouses, banks and elderly homes. Human searching, navigation and motion stability techniques are investigated. Human searching techniques include dynamic (or video) face recognition and microphone array techniques are researched and developed. 3D robot navigation using SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) and RGB-D camera are proposed. High rental costs and shortage of labour in warehouses, banks and elderly homes lead to a great demand of service automation and robots locally. Development of aforesaid technologies of service robots could improve productivity and efficiency of proposed industries. |
