Project Title: | Artificial Intelligence (AI) Vision of AGVs for Crowded Environments |
Hosting Institution: | LSCM R&D Centre (LSCM) |
Abstract: | Retail and Tourism Service industry is accountable for 5% of Hong Kong’s GDP on average. Many local shopping malls are busy and crowded throughout the year. However, service competitions among shopping malls are intense. They constantly look for service automation and robotics solutions that can improve service efficiency and sustain competitiveness. In this respect, service robots capable of delivering purchased items/goods at stores to carpark gates will be helpful. This project aims to research and develop a mobile service robot for delivering goods/items within shopping mall premises. The robot is able to (i) recognize landmarks and objects and find its own path to designated locations (e.g. car parks); (ii) avoid collision against human and other objects; and (iii) carry goods/items with secure measures. Many shopping malls in Hong Kong (e.g. K11 in Tsim Sha Tsui) are often crowded and noisy which causes delays (and interrupts by others) to goods delivery. It is therefore of great importance that the deliverbot moves around and delivers goods to designated locations in dynamic and crowded premises accurately, punctually and safely. To achieve this goal, an autonomous delivery robot with artificial intelligence will be researched and developed. The proposed robot may be applied to other logistic hubs such as e-Commerce warehouses, cargo terminals and hospitals. |
