Deployment of LSCM’s technologies at the new “Hong Kong Society for the Blind Jockey Club Yan Hong Building”
The Hong Kong Society for the Blind’s Yuen Long Home was one of the first Government-subvented establishments to address the needs and strengthen the care for frail and visually-impaired elderly. The Home has recently been renovated with the support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to raise the living standard of the disadvantaged. On December 9, this new Hong Kong Society for the Blind Jockey Club Yan Hong Building was launched which the opening ceremony were officiated by Club Steward Dr Eric Li Ka Cheung; Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong SAR Government Carrie Lam; Chairman of The Hong Kong Society for the Blind Nancy Law and Chairman of The Hong Kong Society for the Blind Yuen Long Home Redevelopment Committee W P Lam. The LSCM R&D Centre’s RFID Blind Cane Navigation System is currently being used in the main lobby and the first floor which provides audible guidance to the visually impaired so that they will be led to the destinations via the shortest route. The Centre also developed an RFID-enabled information kiosk which is placed at the entrance of the patients’ room. The kiosk provides audible information to the visually impaired patients, such as location, weather information, daily activity schedule, etc.
