Since 2000, the Lands Department has established a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) control network, and developed the Hong Kong Satellite Positioning Reference Station (SatRef) network (an active control system with 15 continuous operating reference stations), to support high accuracy positioning in Hong Kong using GNSS technology. However, given the high density of skyscrapers in Hong Kong and limitation of commercial devices, accurate positioning is not always attainable, especially in build-up areas where satellite signals will be reflected and blocked.
This project aims to further enhance the performance of the SatRef network by integrating GPS (Global Positioning System) and Beidou, the Chinese satellite navigation system. Upon the completion of project, it will provide a reliable and high precision augmentation system to support the technology advances in surveying, logistics operation, Geographic Information System (GIS) applications, and Location-based Services (LBS) in Hong Kong.
